Burkevale Protestant Separate School

Burkevale Protestant Separate School is Ontario’s last remaining Protestant separate school and is the only school in the Penetanguishene Protestant Separate School Board. It is located in Penetanguishene on the corner of Peel and Burke Streets. The original two story, red brick building was built in the year 1882 for a cost of $3500. A two story addition was added in 1909-1910. The building was torn down in June 1965 to make way for the current Burkevale Protestant Separate School.

The current school has a population of 348 students in classes from kindergarten to grade 8 and a staff of 44 (2022). The school’s mascot is a bulldog and its motto is “Striving for Excellence”. The school is well-known for its state of the art education, technology, full music program, and great athletic teams. The current principal is Mrs. Julia McLaren.

June 2025 Newsletter

The 2024-2025 school year was one that required staff, students and families to dig a little deeper, show a greater level of empathy, and come together to support one another in times of sorrow. Never in my 20+ year history in education have I been a part of a school that has lost a staff member, and this year, Burkevale lost two amazing staff – Ms. Hamill and Ms. Archer. When tragedies like this occur, it causes us to re-examine the important things in life and to ‘not sweat the small stuff’. Hopefully, we all have time to hug those we love a little more, spend some quality time with friends and family, and appreciate the memories and moments that we create over the summer.

Philosophy

At Burkevale Protestant Separate School, we believe that students are entitled to a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment, where respect for self, others and the environment is as important as academic learning. An important goal of the school is to help students develop self-discipline and social skills so that they can become productive, mature and responsible members of society.
